Wilson, N.C. – The Wilson Tobs are honored to announce that three Tobs were selected for the 2019 All CPL First and Second Teams. Chris Meyers (University of Toledo) was selected to the All-CPL First Team. Michael Calamari (Dartmouth College) and Nicholas Hollas (UT Rio Grande Valley) were selected to the All-CPL Second Team.
Meyers posted a .304 batting average in black and gold this season, featuring a fifteen-game hitting streak from July 2 to July 29, where he batted .473 leading the Tobs offense. Meyers played in 40 games for the Tobs with 25 RBIs and 3 Homeruns. On August 4, the Tobs hosted the Peninsula Pilots playing two innings before rain suspended the contest. With the game continued Monday afternoon, Meyers came to the plate blasting a 3-run homerun with a two-two count straight over the centerfield wall. Meyers was crucial to both the Tobs offense with a .435 Slugging Percentage, and the defense with 103 putouts in the 40 games he played.
Calamari was named to both the All-CPL Second team and the 2019 All-Star North Division Team. Calamari came off a hot season at Dartmouth, leading the team with five home runs and tied for second with 27 RBIs. He used that momentum straight into the Tobs season with a .364 batting average and 19 RBIs, Calamari was an asset at the plate. Calamari came on as a Designated Hitting/Utility player for the Tobs this season playing in 30 games.
Hollas came to the Tobs adding to the starting rotation as a big part of the pitching staff. With a 4-2 record on the season Hollas pitched 47 innings and held a 3.64 ERA. As a leading right-hander for the Tobs, Hollas retired 47 batters on strikes in his 8 appearances. In a game on June 22 versus the Edenton Steamers Hollas had eleven punchouts across seven innings while retiring the first fourteen batters in a row.
Meyers, Calamari and Hollas were a huge part of the success the Tobs saw in the 2019 season. Congratulations to all three for being selected to the All-CPL teams. "I am extremely proud of what our team did this summer and having three of our top guys awarded with being named to the All-CPL team is icing on the cake," said Head Coach Bryan Hill, "Each one of these young men proved themselves as all-star caliber on the field all summer long, being great teammates and helping the team win, but also off the field involving themselves in many of the Tobs community outreach events, camps, and FCA. Chris, Nick, and Michael are prime examples of what being a Wilson Tob embodies and are excellent representatives of the Coastal Plain League."
Wilson tallied first and second half titles for the first time in franchise history and for the first time in 10 years hosted a playoff game at Historic Fleming Stadium. The Tobs claimed the North Division title for the second year in a row defeating the Peninsula Pilots 5-4 in a two-day contest consisting of back and forth battles. The Tobs would fall just short of reaching the Petitt Cup Championship as Morehead City recorded a 4-1 victory in the Northeast Region Championship game.
The Wilson Tobs enjoyed their 23rd season as a founding member of the Coastal Plain League. This past season the Tobs saw an expanded community outreach effort, a repeat North Division Championship team, and a ton of exciting entertainment for the Wilson Community. We would like to dedicate our successful season to the Wilson Community, our Host Families, Corporate Partners and the dedicated fans throughout the city of Wilson.
