Wilson's season ends with loss in Morehead City

(Morehead City, N.C.) – The Wilson Tobs lost to the Morehead City Marlins 4-1 on Tuesday night. The Tobs season ended with the Regional round loss.

Morehead City jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Hunter Shepheard came in to score on an RBI groundout from Bryan Kowalski. The Marlins increased their advantage to 3-0 in the second. Jace Mercer scored on an RBI single from Dusty Baker. Baker later scored on a fielder's choice. Tobs starter Chandler Coates was given an early exit with two outs in the third inning.

Wilson's lone run came in the fifth. The Tobs loaded the bases with no outs with a hit and two walks against Morehead City starter Connor Schultz. On the first pitch to Kevin Jordan, the Tobs second baseman lifted a sacrifice fly into centerfield to drive home Christian Avant. It was the only run the Tobs got out of the situation and the game.

The Marlins added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, coming home on a throwing error. Wilson could not muster any more offense, striking out a total of seventeen times in the game. With the loss, the Tobs have been eliminated from the Petitt Cup Playoffs. It marks the second straight season that the Tobs were eliminated in the Northeast Regional Round by the Marlins. In 2018, Morehead City eventually won the Petitt Cup Championship. The Marlins advance to face the Macon Bacon starting on Thursday.

Wilson finishes their season with 30 wins and 22 losses, including the postseason. The Tobs finished 52 games with a franchise high 46 home runs. They won the first and second half for the first time in modern Coastal Plain League history.
