FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Wilson Tobs return to Big Rock Stadium and face the Morehead City Marlins for the Regional Round of the 2019 Petitt Cup Playoffs. During the regular season, the Tobs took three of four matchups against the Marlins including two at their ballpark. The Marlins had six home losses all season.
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Wilson finished a rain suspended first round game with the Peninsula Pilots, defeating them 5-4 Monday. It marked back-to-back seasons that the Tobs ended the Pilots season in the first round, and it also happened exactly one year apart (August 5, 2018 and August 5, 2019). Chris Meyers gave Wilson their first lead in the third with a three-run home run. Jared Carr ended the contest with a solo shot for the eventual winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
BRING IT BACK: These two teams met in the Regional Round in 2018 with the Morehead City Marlins defeating Wilson 4-2 to end their season. The Tobs had the tying run at the plate with a runner on second base to end the game The Marlins went on to win the Petitt Cup Playoffs for their first Championship in their ninth season, sweeping the High-Point Thomasville HiToms in two games.
'MEMBER? YOU 'MEMBER: Chandler Coates takes the ball for Wilson tonight in a one-game elimination round. During the regular season, Coates made eight starts. While he did not lead Wilson in wins, the Tobs won six of those eight games, most for any starter. The south paw threw six innings of one-run ball (unearned) versus the Marlins on June 14 at Big Rock Stadium, the first time these two teams met. He walked one and struck out four, receiving a no-decision after the Tobs won in extra innings.
STAYING HOT: Michael Calamari enters on a eleven game hitting streak where he's 21 for 41 (.512)...  Hunter Gore has a six game hitting streak with four doubles and two home runs... Christian Avant went hitless on the last game of the regular season which snapped a nine game hitting streak, but picked up two hits in the first playoff game. Since July 22, Avant is 20 for 48 (.455) with eleven RBI...
THAT BABY'S GONE: As a team, Wilson hit 44 home runs in the regular season, the most for a Tobs team since at least 2000. Their previous high was 40 homers hit in the 2017 season, with the lowest total over the last 20 seasons being five hit in 2004. With two more hit in game one of the playoffs, the Tobs have 46 as a team on the year.
WHAT'S AT STAKE: Wilson continues their playoff run for a second straight season. The Tobs have never won a Petitt Cup Championship after being adopted as an inaugural CPL team in 1997. Wilson has tallied six 30 win seasons in 22 CPL years but did not complete that feat after a 29 win regular season. The Tobs have their most wins in a season since 2016. Wilson has made it to the championship round once in 2001 in the modern CPL era, losing to Durham in two games.
ON DECK: Should Wilson win tonight, the Tobs would move on to the Championship Round for the first time since 2001. They would play either the Macon Bacon or the Forrest City Owls. Should the Bacon win, Wilson would host game one on Thursday, August 8 for their final home game of the year. Should the Owls win, the Tobs would host game two on Friday, August 9 and a potential game three on Saturday, August 10 if necessary.
ON THE AIR: Tonight's Tobs game is broadcasted live and on demand online on and on the free Mixlr Android and iOS mobile app. All road games for the 2019 season will offer radio coverage through mixlr and the Tobs website. The voice of the Tobs for the 2019 season is Steve Granado.
