(Wilson, N.C.) – The Wilson Tobs repeated their North Division championship by defeating the Peninsula Pilots 5-4 on Monday afternoon. The Tobs have advanced to the Regional Championship of the Petitt Cup Playoffs for a second straight year.
Tobs starter Nick Hollas recorded four strikeouts over the first two innings, but it was spoiled by a solo home run from Tommy Bell to left field in the second for the 1-0 lead. It was Bell's first homer of the postseason.
At 7:15 PM on Sunday night, heavy rain made landfall at Fleming Stadium, sending the game into a delay and eventually a rain out. The game resumed on Monday at 1:01 PM and Wilson sent Nate Imig out to the hill to make the de facto start. Wilson gave him a lead to work with in the bottom of the third inning when Chris Meyers sent a three-run shot to right field to give the Tobs a 3-1 advantage.
Imig surrendered a run in the top of the fourth inning on a wild pitch. The Pilots tied it up at three as Drew Ashley beat out an infield single and Nick Biddison scored from second. The two teams traded runs back and forth in the top and bottom of the sixth and seventh. Meyers scored on a groundout in the sixth to give Wilson a brief 4-3 lead before Nick Gonzalez scored on an infield single to tie it once more.
Pilots reliever Trey Morgan took over for the bottom of the seventh. On a 3-1 pitch upstairs, Jared Carr sent a solo home run to right to lead off the inning. Carr hit two home runs in all of the regular season in a team most 49 games played.
Peninsula left the tying run standing at third in the eighth inning. CJ Gonzales picked up his first post season save retiring the 9-1-2 batters in order to end the ball game. For a second straight season, the Tobs ended the Pilots' season with a one-run victory. The Tobs defeated the Pilots on August 5, 2018, exactly on year prior to when Wilson won at home in 2019. The Tobs have repeated as North Division Champions after winning the first and second halves.
Taylor Soper (1-0) earned the victory while Morgan (0-1) took the postseason loss. Wilson advances to the Regional Championship round to face the Morehead City Marlins on Tuesday, August 6 at 7:30 PM from Big Rock Stadium. It will be the second straight season that the two teams will meet in the Regional round. All the action can be heard on the Tobs Radio Network starting at 7:20 PM.
