(Wilson, N.C.) – The Wilson Tobs lost to the Morehead City Marlins 8-5 on Sunday evening. It was their first loss against the Marlins and against an East Division team this season.
The Marlins hopped out to a 2-0 lead by the second inning. After a Jack Harris RBI double in the first, Jacob Reimold homered to left in the second. Wilson responded in their half of the bottom of the second inning. For the second straight night, Tobs right fielder Hunter Gore launched a three-run home run to give Wilson their first lead of the night, 3-2. According to Trackman statistics, the ball left the yard 104 MPH off the bat.
In the top of the fourth, Daniel Little sent a two-run home run to left field. Tobs starter Jacob Gilmore, making his last start of the season, struck out a career high nine batters over five innings, allowing four earned runs. He exited with the lead and the opportunity for his first win. Wilson regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a De'Andre Pitts solo home run and sacrifice fly from DeShawn Lookout for a 5-4 advantage.
With two outs in the eighth, Morehead City's offense came alive. Pinch hitter Zack Miller singled, followed by a Little walk. Colby Johnson unleashed a three-run home run over the left field scoreboard. The Marlins would go back-to-back as Jace Mercer followed with a solo homer. Morehead City tallied five straight two-out base runners to grab an 8-5 lead.
Wilson's offense loaded the bases in the eighth inning but never mustered a run further. They fell in order to Cal Hehnke (4) in the ninth as he gathered the save. Taylor Soper (4-1) surrendered all four runs in the eighth and was given his first loss of the year. Leo Perez (5-2), who just one week earlier exactly gave up a three-run home run to the Tobs on July 14, earned his fifth win of the season.
Wilson returns home on Tuesday, July 23 to face the Wilmington Sharks at 7:00 PM. It's All You Can Eat Tuesday and Trivia Night. The evening's festivities are brought to you by Emerge Ortho and Da Bayou Restaurant.
