Wilson speeds to Independence Day win

(Wilson, N.C.) – The Wilson Tobs came away with their fastest nine-inning victory with a 2-1 final in two hours and nine minutes against the Wilmington Sharks on the Fourth of July. Jacob Gilmore tossed six shutout innings for his longest appearance of the season.

The left hander Gilmore was solid in first start against the Sharks this year. The starter scattered two hits and two walks after retiring the first six batters in a row. Gilmore did not allow a run and finished six frames with five strikeouts.

Wilson's offense picked up their first run in the bottom of the fifth. Kevin Jordan sent a laser solo home run to left for his third homer of the season, tying him for the team lead. The 412 foot blast gave the Tobs a 1-0 lead off starter Austin Parsley. The right hander Parsley making his first start of the season was solid as well for seven innings, giving up that one run with a season high seven strikeouts.

Wilmington tied the game in the top of the seventh. A safety squeeze from Clemente Inclan brought home the Sharks only run of the game in Cory Everett. The Tobs regained the lead on a Hunter Gore sacrifice fly in his final trip to the plate to give Wilson a 2-1 lead in the eighth. Gore did not reach base safely in the game, snapping a seventeen-game on base streak.

Jimmy Sharkey was called upon for the save but couldn't get the second out of the inning. The all-star reliever left after recording one out due to apparent lower back problems that he has been dealing with as of late. Taylor Soper (1) got the final two outs in quick succession to lock down the save for the Tobs. Nate Fiala (3-0) tossed two innings and was given the victory. Andrew Kaminksy (0-2) threw one pitch, hit Jordan and was handed the loss after he eventually scored the winning run. The Tobs are now 2-0 against the Sharks this season.

Wilson is back on the road for two straight starting on Friday before the All-Star break begins on Sunday. The next Tobs home game is on July 11 against the Asheboro Copperheads.
