(Hampton, V.A.) – The Wilson Tobs surrendered five runs in the sixth inning and could never recover, dropping a Monday night affair with the Peninsula Pilots 12-6. The Edenton Steamers lost to keep the Tobs lead at one game in the north, making the magic number four.
The Pilots tagged Wilson starter Grant Fremion with their first ups of the night. Tommy Bell doubled in Jake Boone. It was followed later by an Andrew Walden to bring home another. The Pilots took a 2-0 lead to the second, but Wilson responded quickly in the third. De'Andre Pitts launched his first home run of the season to left to tie the game at two. Later in the inning Jared Carr singled home the go-ahead run.
Wilson's 3-2 lead stayed into the bottom of the fifth. Kyle Battle hit a leadoff solo home run to knock Tobs starter Fremion out of the game. He tossed four innings and one batter, allowing three runs on eight hits. The Pilots ran away in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five times on four hits. Cole Secrest hit a two-run home run as Peninsula batted around in the inning.
Trailing 8-3 heading into the eighth, the Tobs rattled off three runs. Carr tripled home Hunter Gore for his fourth hit of the night. He finished the game a home run shy of the cycle. Shamoy Christopher hit a two-run homer for his second long ball of the season.
The Tobs bullpen couldn't keep the score close. Entering the bottom of the eighth, the Tobs trailed 8-6, but four runs came across all with two outs. Riley Hogan hit a two-run single to right to cap the frame. Wilson got a hit in the ninth but could not score. Wilson fell for the second straight night, 12-6. Nate Torbich (0-1) allowed two runs in relief and took the loss. Tyler Hagedorn (2-0) tossed the final five innings in relief and earned his second win.
With the Tobs loss and Edenton's loss, Wilson still leads by one game in the Northern Division. Both teams have four games left in the first half. The Tobs magic number to clinch the first half division crown is four. The Steamers are off on Tuesday but rev back up on Wednesday. Wilson is on the road on Tuesday night to face the Asheboro Copperheads for the first time this season. All the action can be heard on the Tobs Radio Network starting 6:50 PM.
