MARTINSVILLE 4 WILSON TOBS 3
(Wilson, N.C.) – The Wilson Tobs and Martinsville Mustangs split a double header on Thursday evening. In extra innings in game two, Tobs manager Bryan Hill was ejected after arguing a close play at third base.
Game one was a continuation of a suspended game from June 17. Wilson served as the road team at Fleming Stadium as the Mustangs picked up the contest in the bottom of the first. Official delay time ran for 69 hours and 46 minutes. The game ran into another 44-minute delay 20 minutes into the game.
Tobs starter Nate Fiala and Mustangs starter Jake Lipetzky immediately started dueling. Through the first five innings, both matched scoreless frames. Fiala finished tossing a season high six innings, allowing just two hits in the game, both singles.
Wilson's offense got to Lipetzky in the sixth. De'Andre Pitts and Hunter Gore both drew bases loaded walks in the inning to put the Tobs on the board. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Wilson rattled off four straight hits, including three straight RBI doubles from Michael Calamari, DeShawn Lookout and Chris Meyers. Wilson cruised to a 5-0 win. It was their first shutout victory of 2019 and their first since July 12, 2018 when the Tobs also shut out Martinsvile 3-0.
Fiala (2-0) gave way to the bullpen after six but earned the win. Lipetzky (1-1) pitched valiantly but took his first loss of the season.
Game two started in similar fashion. Martinsville's Tom Butler and Wilson's Josh Sieglitz began matching each other inning by inning. Drew DeVine left the yard with a solo home run in the third inning for his first homer of the season to give Wilson a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs answered back with a Dominic Cox solo homer in the fifth and a Hank Moore RBI single in the sixth. Sieglitz went five and two thirds innings, striking out a season high nine. It ties the most strikeouts for a Tobs' pitcher in a single game in 2019, to put him alongside Nick Hollas.
In the bottom of the seventh, down to their final strike, Hunter Gore poked a single into right field to bring home Kevin Jordan and tie the game. A short-lived tie fell apart in the eighth as Gore committed an error on a misjudged ball in left field that led to the go-ahead run scoring. Another would come across on a wild pitch to give the Mustangs a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, a wild pitch would send two Tobs runners into a frenzy. A throw down to third sailed into left and plated Gore. Jared Carr would attempt to take third base on the play, but was called out on a close tag play at the bag. Tobs second year manager Hill argued the call immediately and was subsequently ejected from the game by base umpire Ryan Wilson. It was the first time this season that any Wilson personnel was ejected from a game.
Wilson couldn't muster more than the one run in the inning and eventually fell by a 4-3 final for a double header split. CJ Gonzalez (1-2) would suffer the loss while Charlie Hasty (1-0) earned the victory. With the split, the Tobs are now 10-7 on the season.
The Tobs head on the road on Friday for a matchup with the Peninsula Pilots at 7:05 p.m. All the action can be heard starting at 6:55 p.m. on mixlr.com/WilsonTobs.
