(Wilson, N.C) – The Wilson Tobs opened exhibition play with a 10-1 victory over the Fuquay-Varina Twins. Eight Tobs pitchers combined for eleven strikeouts, allowing just one unearned run on two hits.
Chandler Coates gave up the lone Twins run in the first. Cameron Norgren scored on a fielder's choice groundout to give Fuquay-Varina an early 1-0 advantage. Wilson tied the contest in the bottom of the second. Marquise Lanier stole home on a delayed double steal with Drew Devine. Lanier would later drive in the go-ahead run in the third with a sacrifice fly, Tobs led 2-1.
The Tobs offense exploded for five runs in the fourth inning. Chris Meyers drove in a pair with a double to set Wilson apart. As a part of three-run sixth inning, returner J.T. Stone launched a two-run home run to finish the night. Stone had one home run in 27 games during the 2018 Tobs season. Only relief pitcher Tommy Koide threw more than one inning on Sunday night. Koide struck out four, retiring the first four batters he saw, never allowing a hit.
Mason Medlin took the win after being on the mound when the Tobs took the lead in the third. Carter Cochrane was handed the loss after three innings of work. Wilson is 1-0 in exhibition play with Coastal Plain League play beginning on Thursday against the Martinsville Mustangs.
