Five to Return to Wilson for 2019 Season!

Five to Return to Wilson for 2019 Season!
Wilson, NC - College baseball is in full swing so it's only fitting to announce our 5 returning players from last season's 2018 North Division Championship powerhouse team. Our Tobs staff is extremely happy to announce the return of JT Stone (University of Mount Olive), Shamoy Christopher (Tennessee Wesleyan), Colby Warren (Barton College), Nate Fiala (East Stroudsburg), and Joshua Arnold (Fairfield University) to Historic Fleming Stadium in black and gold for the summer of 2019.

JT Stone, a redshirt-sophomore, played a large amount of his games at Historic Fleming Stadium last summer as a second baseman and right fielder. At UMO, he appears as a utility player and displays his versatility defensively while swinging a big bat. JT battled a tough injury after his hot start to the 2018 season with UMO, but that didn't stop him from making an impact with the Tobs last summer. He had 9 extra base hits with an average of .222 over 27 games. His 2019 campaign is off to another hot start. The Trojans opened the weekend in Florida where Stone was 5 for 11 with 2 HR's. Stone was a big part of the offensive success the Tobs had in the summer of 2018 and the hope is that he can be the spark again that the Tobs and Coach Hill need.

Shamoy Christopher, a redshirt-junior from Newport, VA was a crucial piece of the Wilson Tobs in 2018. At Tennessee Wesleyan, in 2019 he has made appearances in 3 of the first four 4 games with the Bulldogs, knocking in 2 runs to start off the season. Shamoy was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 20th round out of high school in 2016. Head coach Bryan Hill had this to say, "Shamoy showed tremendous arm strength behind the plate here in Wilson last summer and we are lucky to him back there again to corral our pitching staff. His ability to switch hit and show power from both sides of the plate is impressive. Off the field Shamoy was also amazing here. He was very active in our youth camps and had a great relationship with his host family. That's the culture we like to have here in Wilson."

Colby Warren is a corner infielder from Barton College who will also be returning for 2019. Colby is a Sophomore out of Roanoke Rapids and may be remembered for hitting one out of the park to left field in his first at bat with the Tobs in 2018. Colby was named Freshman of the Year for the Conference of the Carolinas Baseball. Warren matched the single-season record set by a Barton freshman with 12 home runs hit in a season. He also paced the Bulldogs with 31 RBI and was just one of two players to play in all-48 games for Barton. Warren tallied 52 hits and seven doubles on the season to go along with a .313 batting average. Colby played only 11 games for the Tobs in 2018 but was able to do his part with 3 extra base hits and a slugging percentage of .333. Warren made the transition from 3B to 1B this season and is a weekend pitcher at Barton to begin his sophomore campaign. In December of 2018 Colby traveled down to Marlins Park in Miami to represent NC in the Power Showcase Collegiate Home Run Derby. He belted 4 home runs and his furthest went 403 feet. He finished 13th out of 35 contestants.

Fiala, a Redshirt Sophomore Pitcher from Scranton, PA playing collegiate ball right down the road from his hometown at East Stroudsburg University. Nate was redshirted during the 2017-2018 college baseball season that didn't stop him from making an immediate impact on the team appearing in 17 games and tossing 39 innings of ball and having an earned run average of 3.69 while striking out 37 in lieu of a 5-1 record. Nate is also a returning member of the 2017-2018 Wilson Tobs team where he appeared in two games and pitched two innings in relief while surrendering 0 earned runs and an opponent batting average of .125. He arrived in Wilson late last season and was a great pick up for the Tobs going into the playoffs after the pitching staff suffered an injury late in July. Having him begin the season and using his abilities for the full summer will be monumental to the pitching staff.

Joshua Arnold was a regular starter for the Tobs last summer. He returned to Fairfield University to remain in their weekend rotation this spring. During his sophomore season he earned a spot in the starting rotation throwing 53.1 innings pitched and posting a 4.89 ERA with 44 strikeouts. Josh also helped pave the way for Fairfield's biggest upset of regional power house St. Johns. He pitched a strong 6 innings while surrendering only 1 run on only two hits, this also marked the first time that Fairfield has beaten St. John's since the 2005 season. Josh also starred in the classroom where he was picked to be in the 2018 MAAC all-academic team. The Tobs plan to use Arnold in their regular rotation and we are glad to have him back in Wilson. Last season in Wilson he started 5 games, totaling 18 innings and 20 strikeouts while only walking 9. He posted a 3.50 ERA and 10.00 K's per game. His fastball has great life to it, and he has a sharp breaking ball to compliment that. Tobs fans, welcome back Joshua Arnold.
