MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The 2018 season came to an end on Tuesday night for the Wilson Tobs as the Morehead City Marlins produced some early offense along with a strong pitching performance from Octavio Mirabal. Despite scoring a pair of runs in the ninth inning, Morehead City tallied a 4-2 victory.
Wilson looked to advance to just its third championship series matchup in the Coastal Plain League after capturing the North Division Championship on Sunday night against the Peninsula Pilots. The Tobs would be unable to overcome a four-run deficit and saw their run for a Petitt Cup Championship come to an end in the Northeast Region Championship.
Drew Brooks, Ben Faso, Nick Smith, and JT Stone each produced a hit in the contest for Wilson as Smith delivered a pinch-hit bunt single in the top of the ninth inning. Matt McCourt was responsible for the lone run batted in as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth. Shamoy Christopher worked a pair of walks in the contest and scored the other run for Wilson off a passed ball.
Morehead City plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning against Wilson starter Sean Deely. A bloop single to left field allowed the Marlins to strike first and take a 2-0 advantage. The Marlins increased the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run from Joe Mason.
Wilson had its first chance to try and get on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning as Christopher and Brooks reached base following a groundout from Kevin McGowan. Morehead City and Mirabal would get out of the inning thanks to an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
The Tobs stranded a pair of runners on base in the top of the sixth inning and followed by leaving three runners on base in the top of the seventh inning. Down to its final three outs in the top of the ninth inning, Wilson loaded the bases against the Morehead City bullpen. Wilson trimmed the deficit to 4-1 as McCourt was drilled on the hand with a pitch. The big break for the Marlins came with Brenton Doyle at the plate as he lined a ball to the second baseman for the start of a 4-6 double play. The Tobs closed the scoring off a passed ball to make it 4-2.
Wilson finished the season with an overall record of 23-24 and captured the North Division Second Half title after going 12-9. The North Division crown was the first for Wilson since earning the honors back in 2010.
