Tobs Down Peninsula 4-3; Claim North Division Championship

HAMPTON, Va. – Wilson Tobs starter Tyler Grauer tossed six innings of scoreless baseball on Sunday night in the Coastal Plain League North Division Championship against the Peninsula Pilots. The Tobs held-off a ninth-inning rally from the Pilots to secure a 4-3 victory and advance in the CPL Playoffs.

The Tobs advance to the NorthEast Region Championship on Tuesday, August 7 and will face the Morehead City Marlins in Morehead City, N.C. The winner will advance to the Petitt Cup Championship and face the winner of the SouthWest Region Championship in a three-game series.

Kevin McGowan finished the contest 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in, while Shamoy Christopher and Ben Faso each tallied RBI base hits. Brenton Doyle went 2-for-4 with a triple for the Tobs, while JT Stone and Colby Warren each recorded a hit.

The Tobs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Kevin McGowan plated Faso and Stone with a single up the middle. Christopher followed with a single into left field that allowed Caleb Dean to score and make it 3-0.

Faso helped increase the Wilson advantage to 4-0 in the top of the fifth inning with a single to left center after Doyle started the inning with a triple. The lead would hold at four until the Pilots rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning.

A pair of errors defensively for the Tobs allowed Peninsula to trim the deficit to 4-2. The Pilots would get runners on first and second base with one out in the frame before Jared Gallagher got consecutive fly balls to center field to end the threat.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Peninsula plated a run against Wilson reliever Luis Acosta to cut the deficit to 4-3. Cole Girouard delivered a one-out single to right field and would be followed by a double to left field from Jack Strunc to trim the gap to a single run.

With the potential winning run on base, Acosta got Cole Prestegard to hit a fly ball to deep right field. Faso tracked down the baseball and made the catch to end the game and preserve the 4-3 victory for the Tobs.

Grauer tossed six innings of scoreless baseball and yielded just three hits in earning the victory. He also fanned seven batters and issued just two walks in the contest. Danny Cody tossed a scoreless inning of relief, while Gallagher allowed a pair of unearned runs.
