Tobs Drop Home Finale Against Edenton, 6-0

WILSON, N.C. – The Wilson Tobs just didn't have the answer against Edenton starter Jake Miller on Thursday night at Historic Fleming Stadium. The Steamers used a three-run eighth inning to fuel a 6-0 victory and spoil the Tobs regular-season home finale.

Brenton Doyle paced the Tobs offensively with a pair of hits, including his team-leading 10th double of the season in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Smith tallied a bunt single, while Caleb Dean delivered a double in the bottom of the ninth inning for Wilson.

The Tobs honored their fans and host families by hosting an appreciation night at the ballpark. It was also the final Throwback Thirsty Thursday and Farm to Field Farmer's Market of the season. Over 1,200 fans braved the elements that Mother Nature threw their way by rooting on the Tobs.

Edenton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Wilson starter Chris Kernen as Ben Whetstone sent a double into right center. Zane Harris upped the advantage to 2-0 in the top of the third inning with a solo home run to right field off Kernen.

The two runs would be the only that Kernen allowed on the night as he navigated through six innings on the bump for Wilson. The Steamers upped their lead to 4-0 in the top of the seventh inning against the Wilson bullpen as a bases-loaded walk kept the inning alive. Reliever Jared Gallagher would get the Tobs out of the inning and strand the bases loaded.

Edenton added three runs in the top of the eighth inning against Gallagher and reliever Luis Acosta. The Steamers plated a pair of runs off singles from Tim Bechtold and TJ Wegmann. The Steamers rounded out the scoring as Bechtold scored on a passed ball to make it 6-0.

Kernen was handed with the loss despite yielding just two runs off five hits through six innings of work. He fanned five batters while not issuing a walk to the Steamers. Nate Fiala tossed a scoreless top of the ninth inning, fanning a pair of batters for Wilson.

Wilson finishes the 2018 Coastal Plain League season on the road with a pair of matchups against High Point-Thomasville and Martinsville. The Tobs will look to clinch a berth in the playoffs with a win over the course of the final two games against the HiToms and Mustangs.

The Wilson Tobs enter their 22nd season as a founding member of the Coastal Plain League. The upcoming season for the Tobs will see an expanded community outreach effort, increased participation in helping the less fortunate, a Pettit Cup Championship team, and more exciting entertainment for the Wilson Community. We would like to dedicate each successful season to the Wilson Community, Coastal Plain League Organization, Host Families, Corporate Partners, and the Dedicated Fans throughout the city of Wilson. The Wilson Tobs have played host to over 100 alumni taken in the draft and have produced a dozen players who have gone on to play in the MLB, including Cy Young & MVP winner Justin Verlander.
