Late Offense Not Enough for Tobs in Loss at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Despite scoring three late runs on Saturday night, the Wilson Tobs dropped a 13-3 decision against the Martinsville Mustangs at Hooker Field. The Mustangs would jump out to an early lead after scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Brenton Doyle and Ben Faso finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate with one run batted in as Faso started the contest 2-for-2. Matt McCourt and Nick Smith each tallied a hit for the Tobs as McCourt delivered his fifth double of the season.

Martinsville would take advantage of three errors by the Tobs in the bottom of the first inning and stake themselves out to a 7-0 advantage. The Mustangs increased the lead to 10-0 in the bottom of the second inning as Joe Boyle added a three-run home run.

Faso gave the Tobs their first baserunner in the top of the second inning as Faso notched a two-out single to right field. Doyle looked to get something going offensively for the Tobs in the top of the fourth inning with a single to center field. The Mustangs would turn a 4-6-3 double play to thwart the rally.

Wilson put a pair of runners on base in the top of the fifth inning as Faso and Smith recorded back-to-back singles. The Mustangs would get out of the inning following a fielder's choice and fly ball to right field that would be caught by a diving Sage Bruhl.

The Tobs plated a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning as Shamoy Christopher scored from second off a double from McCourt into center field. McCourt would advance to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout to second by Doyle.

JT Stone walked to lead off the ninth inning and would advance to third following a pair of wild pitches. Faso plated Stone with a fly out to center and would be followed by a walk to Smith. Martinsville ended the game with a strikeout of Christopher.

Gary Watkins (2-1) took the loss for the Tobs after exiting the game in the second inning. Watkins allowed five earned runs off seven hits. Eddy Tavarez and Danny Cody each tossed a scoreless inning of relief for the Tobs.

Addison Domingo (4-1) earned the win after working into the ninth inning and yielding just one earned a run. Domingo fanned 10 batters and walked two while scattering six hits. Greg Leban closed the game by recording the three outs in the ninth inning.

The Tobs are off on Sunday before heading to Morehead City, N.C. on Monday for a 7:05 p.m. matchup with the Marlins. Wilson hosts Peninsula on Tuesday night for the final Tobs All You Can Eat Tuesday of the season.
