Tobs Paint the Park Pink; Fall at Home Against Martinsville

WILSON, N.C. – Thursday night was not the night for the Wilson Tobs as the Martinsville Mustangs notched a 10-0 win against the Tobs at Historic Fleming Stadium.

The Tobs hosted Paint the Park Pink Night on Thursday as players wore special pink jerseys that were auctioned off throughout the night. Proceeds from the jersey auction along with a charity softball game that was held earlier in the day will benefit the Community Health Center for eligible women who need mammograms.

Caleb Dean, Matt McCourt, and JT Stone each tallied a hit in the contest for the Tobs as Dean recorded his team-leading ninth double of the season. McCourt and Nick Smith both worked walks on the night against Martinsville starter Lowell Schipper, who recorded 12 strikeouts in the contest.

The Mustangs took an early 2-0 lead against the Tobs in the top of the first inning. Martinsville would also plate a run in the top of the second inning against Wilson starter Chris Kernen.

Wilson would be unable to muster any offense against Schipper and the Mustangs until Smith and McCourt worked consecutive walks with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. The Tobs recorded their first hit of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning as McCourt hit a popup to third base that would elude the fielder and drop while Jacob Charron advanced to third on the play.

Dean delivered a two-out double for the Tobs in the bottom of the sixth inning but would be stranded at third base after advancing thanks to a passed by the Mustangs. Stone recorded the third hit of the night for the Tobs in the eighth inning with a one-out single into center field. Martinsville reliever Charles Hasty stranded Stone at first with back-to-back outs to end the frame.

Kernen (3-1) took the loss for the Tobs after allowing three runs off seven hits through four innings of work. Kernen fanned a pair of batters while issuing two walks. Charlie Sheehan and Eddy Tavarez each worked a scoreless inning of relief, while newcomer Nate Fiala recorded a pair of strikeouts.

Schipper (3-1) held the Tobs scoreless in his seven innings of work and fanned 12 batters in the process. He yielded just two hits and two walks while recording the shutout on 114 pitches. Hasty fanned four batters through two innings of relief and allowed one hit.

The Tobs hit the road for three games and head to Hampton, Va. for a matchup with the Peninsula Pilots on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Wilson then heads to Martinsville on Saturday night for a 7:15 p.m. matchup with the Mustangs.

The Wilson Tobs enter their 22nd season as a founding member of the Coastal Plain League.
