Early Offense Helps Tobs Ground Peninsula, 5-3

HAMPTON, Va. – The Wilson Tobs scored three runs between the first and second innings on Monday night to secure a 5-3 victory against the Peninsula Pilots at War Memorial Stadium. The Tobs improved their record to 9-2 in the second-half of the Coastal Plain League season and lead Peninsula (6-4).

JT Stone finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and one run scored, while Brenton Doyle went 1-for-4 with one run batted in. Kevin McGowan delivered a run-scoring single for the Tobs in the top of the fifth inning, while Caleb Dean hit his third home run of the season in the top of the ninth inning.

Peninsula starter Douglas Palmer allowed a pair of first-inning runs in the contest as Matt McCourt scored from third following a stolen base from Jack Duffy to make it 1-0 Wilson. Doyle extended the Wilson lead to 2-0 as his fielder's choice to the pitcher allowed Duffy to score from third.

Shamoy Christopher increased the advantage for the Tobs to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning against Palmer as Stone scored from third. Wilson starter Tyler Grauer kept the Pilots off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth inning.

Grauer worked around a lead-off double from Jack Strunc in the bottom of the fourth inning, fanning consecutive batters and getting a groundball for the third out of the frame. Peninsula trimmed the Wilson lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth as Jonathan Embry singled to right field to plate the Pilots' first run of the contest.

A sacrifice fly from Strunc allowed Cole Girouard to score from third and cut the deficit to two runs. Grauer stranded a runner on base as he recorded a strikeout to end the fifth.

Peninsula looked to rally in the bottom of the eighth inning against the Wilson bullpen. The Pilots would load the bases following a pair of walks. The Tobs would turn to reliever Luis Acosta to navigate through the bases-loaded jam with no outs in the inning. Acosta would get a pair of pop-ups and a strikeout to strand all three Peninsula runners on base and preserve the 4-2 lead for the Tobs.

Dean lead-off the top of the ninth inning with a solo home run against Peninsula reliever Kyle Kovach, who retired the Tobs in order in the top of the eighth inning. The Pilots plated a run against Acosta in the bottom of the ninth inning as Strunc delivered his second double of the contest to plate Embry. Acosta recorded a strikeout of Dalton Dedas to end the game and secure his fifth save of the season.
