FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Wilson Tobs dropped a see-saw battle on Friday night against the Fayetteville SwampDogs as Wilson saw the SwampDogs rally to tie the game in the ninth inning before winning 13-12 with a pair of runs in the eleventh inning.
Brenton Doyle finished the contest 4-for-6 at the plate with a pair of runs batted in for the Tobs, while Matt McCourt went 3-for-6 with two RBI. Ben Faso extended his hitting streak to 10 games, while JT Stone and Caleb Dean each delivered a bases-clearing double in the contest.
The Tobs held three leads late in the contest as Fayetteville rallied from a 9-8 deficit to knot the score in the bottom of the ninth inning. Wilson plated a pair of runs in the top of the tenth inning, only to see the SwampDogs answer with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
One run for Wilson in the top of the eleventh inning wouldn't be enough as Fayetteville scored twice in the bottom of the frame to secure the 13-12 victory.
Wilson opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Stone plated three runs with a double into left field. Fayetteville trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the first following a passed ball. The SwampDogs would increase their lead to 4-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Doyle singled to center field in the top of the fifth to trim the gap to 5-4. Fayetteville upped its advantage to 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning as a double and a sacrifice fly made it 7-4. The Tobs erupted for five runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 9-7 lead.
Fayetteville chipped away at the deficit by plating a pair of runs in the eighth and ninth innings. A single from Hrica with two outs knotted the score 9-9 as the fans at JP Riddle Stadium would be treated to free baseball.
Josh Arnold took the no-decision for the Tobs after allowing five runs through 2.2 innings of work. Ryan Troutman gave the Tobs 2.1 scoreless innings of relief and fanned three batters while scattering three hits. Caleb Dean (0-1) suffered the loss for the Tobs after yielding two runs off two hits.
Wilson hits the road for a meeting with Edenton on Saturday before returning home on Sunday to host Wilmington at 6 p.m. It will be Christmas in July at the ballpark along with Bang for your Buck Sunday courtesy of State Farm Agent Jana Lake and Thomas Law Attorneys.
