Tobs Roll to Fifth Straight Win Ahead of All-Star Break; Down Morehead City 9-5

WILSON, N.C. – A seven-run bottom of the seventh inning propelled the Wilson Tobs to a 9-5 victory over the Morehead City Marlins on Saturday night at Historic Fleming Stadium. The Tobs erased a 3-1 deficit to run their winning streak to five games heading into the all-star break.

The Tobs hosted their Fan Fanatic Cash Giveaway courtesy of BB&T as fans had the opportunity to win cash prizes throughout the night.

Matt McCourt, Jack Duffy, Kevin McGowan, Ben Faso, and Colby Warren each recorded two hits in the contest for the Tobs. Seven different Wilson batters tallied a run batted in while Warren crushed his first home run of the season in his first at-bat for the Tobs. Faso extended his hitting streak to seven games for the Tobs with a single in the bottom of the second inning.

Warren knotted the score 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning, sending a ball over the wall in left field to leadoff the frame. Morehead City tallied their opening run of the game via the long ball as well in the top of the second inning.

The Marlins would plate a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-1 advantage over the Tobs. McCourt helped to trim the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh with his single to left that scored Jacob Charron. Duffy followed with a double to plate Warren and knot the score 3-3.

A wild pitch allowed the Tobs to take their first lead of the night (4-3) while an error increased the advantage to 5-3. Charron delivered a run-scoring single through the right side to make it 7-3 in favor of Wilson as the Tobs upped the gap to 8-3 following a wild pitch.

Dominick Cammarata singled through the left side in the top of the eighth inning to pull the Marlins within three runs of Wilson as Will Johnson and Hunter Shepherd scored to make it 8-5. The Tobs would get one of the runs back in the bottom of the frame as Caleb Dean singled up the middle to score Duffy and make it 9-5.

Luis Acosta closed the door on the Marlins in the top of the ninth inning by logging a 1-2-3 frame. Danny Cody (3-0) earned the win for the Tobs after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings of baseball. Wilson starter Chris Kernen took the no-decision for the Tobs after exiting the game in the sixth inning. Kernen allowed three runs off four hits while walking two batters and fanning three.
