Tobs Drop 5-1 Decision at Peninsula

HAMPTON, VA. –  Four runs through the first four innings helped the Peninsula Pilots to a 5-1 victory against the Wilson Tobs on Saturday night at War Memorial Stadium. JT Stone finished the contest 1-for-3 at the plate with one run batted in for the Tobs.

Kevin McGowan paced the Tobs with a pair of hits in the contest, going 2-for-5 at the dish with a double. Caleb Dean tallied a triple in the top of the sixth inning and scored the lone run for the Tobs. Patrick Frick went 1-for-2 at the plate and was twice hit by a pitch for Wilson.

Peninsula plated a run in each of the first four innings against Wilson starter David Harrison on Saturday night. The Tobs kicked off the fourth inning with back-to-back singles from Frick and McGowan but would see the pair stranded on base as Pilots starter Douglas Palmer fanned two batters and recorded a fly out to end the frame.

Trailing 4-0, the Tobs loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning but would be unable to cut into the deficit as McGowan grounded out to the first baseman. Dean greeted Andrew McInvale into the game with a leadoff triple in the top of the sixth inning. Stone plated Dean with an infield single to get the Tobs on the scoreboard. Following a hit batter, Brenton Doyle would be unable to keep the inning alive against Peninsula reliever Hunter Martin.

The Tobs had a pair of chances to cut into the 5-1 advantage for Peninsula in the eighth and ninth innings but Pilots reliever Eric Mullet had the answer both times to keep Wilson off the scoreboard. Harrison (0-1) suffered the loss for Wilson after allowing four runs off six hits to go along with four walks and five strikeouts. Palmer (1-1) evened his overall record by earning the win for the Pilots after tossing five innings of shutout baseball. Mullet recorded his first save of the season after tossing the final three innings of the contest.

The Tobs host Fayetteville on Sunday for a pair of seven-inning contests beginning at 6 p.m. The Tobs will be hosting their sixth annual Home Run for Hunger Celebration as fans that bring a non-perishable food item will receive free admission into the game.
