Peninsula snaps Wilson’s winning streak at six with 8-6 victory

WILSON, N.C. –  Antwaun Tucker's 4-for-4 performance at the plate wouldn't be enough for the Wilson Tobs on Tuesday night at Historic Fleming Stadium as the Peninsula Pilots tallied three runs late to secure an 8-6 victory in a battle of the top two teams in the Coastal Plain League North Division.

It was another Tobs All You Can Eat Tuesday courtesy of Da Bayou as fans enjoyed trying to stay cool on a hazy, hot, and humid day at the ballpark.

Tucker paced the Tobs offensively with four singles and a pair of runs batted in while working a walk in his final at-bat of the night. Kevin McGowan, Caleb Dean, and Brenton Doyle each delivered a pair of hits for the Tobs as McGowan tallied two RBIs in the contest. Doyle recorded an RBI double for Wilson, while Dean connected on his first home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Wilson recorded 14 hits in the contest as Tucker, Dean, and Jacob Nester accounted for seven of those hits. The trio also reached base 11 times as Tucker reached five times.

Tucker knotted the score 2-2 with his single to left field in the bottom of the second inning as Dean and Carson Freeman touched home. Peninsula answered by taking its second lead of the night in the top of the third as Cole Prestegard plated a pair of runs with a double to left field to make it 4-2.

The Pilots increased their lead to 5-2 in the top of the fourth inning before the Tobs rallied once again in the bottom of the frame. Dean started things by sending a ball over the wall in left field to trim the deficit to 5-3. For the second time in as many games, McGowan delivered a clutch single to plate Tucker and Doyle to even the score at 5-5.

Wilson had several opportunities to try and take a lead in each of the next three innings but would be unable to push across the go-ahead run. Peninsula broke the tie with an infield single in the top of the seventh inning as Matthew Schwarz brought in Jon Strunc to make it 6-5. The Pilots added another run in the frame to increase the lead to 7-5.

The Tobs rallied with one out in the bottom of the seventh as Doyle followed a walk and a single with a run-scoring double to trim the deficit to 7-6. Wilson looked to continue the inning with a pair of runners in scoring position until Ethan Elliott fanned back-to-back batters to end the inning.

Peninsula would take another two-run advantage in the top of the eighth off an error by the Tobs as a runner scored from second to make it 8-6. Wilson had the makings for a rally in the bottom of the ninth inning as Ryan Erickson walked Nester and Tucker with one out in the inning. Erickson responded though by fanning Doyle and Brooks to end the game and give the Pilots their first win against Wilson this season.

Elliott (1-0) got the win for Peninsula, while Erickson tallied his third save of the season for the Pilots. Wilson's Sean Deely took a no-decision for the Tobs after exiting the game in the third inning. Cody Smith tossed a clean inning for the Tobs and recorded a pair of strikeouts after taking over for Deely. Sam Lanier (0-1) suffered the loss for the Tobs after allowing both runs in the seventh inning.

The Tobs are on the road Wednesday for a 7:05 p.m. matchup against the Wilmington Sharks and return home for EmergeOrtho and Host Family Appreciation Night along with Throwback Thirsty Thursday.
