Wilson tops Edenton 7-1 behind Grauer’s strong start

EDENTON, N.C. – Tyler Grauer fanned 10 Edenton batters through five innings on Friday night as the Tobs won their second straight contest, 7-1, against the Steamers in a Coastal Plain League matchup. The Tobs erased an early 1-0 deficit by scoring two runs in the top of the second inning.

A trio of Tobs finished with multiple hits in the contest as Drew Brooks went 2-for-5 at the plate, while Patrick Frick and Shamoy Christopher added a pair of hits. Christopher was responsible for one run batted in while scoring a pair of runs for the Tobs. Antwaun Tucker finished the contest with a pair of RBIs as his double in the third inning extended the Wilson lead to 5-1.

The Tobs would knot the score 1-1 in the top of the second inning as Kevin McGowan singled down the third base line to score Christopher. With runners on the corners, McGowan would swipe second and see the throw Edenton catcher Nick Caruso sail into centerfield. The miscue allowed Jacob Nester to score from third and give Wilson a 2-1 advantage.

Frick would leadoff the third inning with a single to left field and later swipe second. Frick advanced to third with one out in the frame following a balk and would score on a double to left field off the bat of Christopher. Leading 3-1, Tucker greeted Steamers relief pitcher Josh Leaser into the game with a double to plate a pair of runners.

Grauer kept the Edenton offense at bay following a first-inning RBI single from Caruso. Grauer worked consecutive 1-2-3 frames in the second and third, tallying a pair of strikeouts in the third inning. He would navigate through the fifth inning with three strikeouts after issuing a pair of walks and stranding two Edenton runners on base.

Wilson would increase its lead to 7-1 in the top of the sixth inning as Brenton Doyle scored from third on a pitch that would elude the Edenton catcher and a wild pitch that saw Brooks score from third. The Steamers looked to get something going offensively in the bottom of the frame against Wilson reliever Ryan Troutman.

Edenton would get a two-out double from TJ Wegmann and a walk to Devon Gardner only to see Troutman get a popup to the second baseman to strand both on base. Troutman, Eddy Tavarez, and Austin Vernon tossed three scoreless frames to close out the game and preserve the 7-1 victory for the Tobs.

Grauer (1-0) fanned 10 batters while issuing just three walks on the night through five innings. Tobs pitching recorded 12 strikeouts in the contest and tallied double-digit figures for the second straight night.
