Bayou Bengals heading to Wilson

McGhee, Bertuccini to continue LSU pipeline

December 17, 2007

Wilson, NC — After success with Jason Lewis last season, who put up solid numbers despite a shortened summer due to a back injury, Tobs coach Jeff Steele and GM Ben Jones decided to double up on Tigers for 2008, signing speedy utility man Chris McGhee and shut-down reliever Paul Bertuccini.

McGhee, who will be a junior in 2008, brings the ability to play multiple defensive positions. In 2007 he started games at second base, left field and right field.

The 5'8" McGhee, a Louisiana native, hit .226 in his sophomore season in 93 at-bats over 42 games. He hit 1 home run and drove in 11 while scoring 19 runs. Speed is his main weapon. He was successful on 10 out of 11 steal attempts in 2007.

"We are excited to have Chris join us in Wilson this summer. His athleticism and versatility will provide us with a lot of options as the summer plays out," said Tobs head coach Jeff Steele.

Bertuccini was a mainstay in the Tigers bullpen in 2007. The Merairie, Louisiana native appeared in 23 games, tied for second most among LSU pitchers, and posted a 3.32 ERA, four saves, and a 1-2 record.

"Paul is going to provide us with some much needed stability out of the bullpen. A proven reliever in the SEC, Paul has the potential to give us great innings and his experience will be relied upon heavily to help lead our staff," said Tobs general manager Ben Jones.

He was even more dominant against talented SEC competition. In 10 conference games, Bertuccini posted a stellar 0.93 ERA and two saves. He will enter the 2008 season as a redshirt sophomore.

The Wilson Tobs are a member franchise of the Coastal Plain League. With fifteen teams in the Carolinas and Virginia, the league attracts top players from collegiate programs throughout the country. Playing home games at Historic Fleming Stadium.
