Tobs bring back Steele for sixth season

September 18, 2009

Wilson, NC — The entire Wilson Tobs organization is excited to announce that manager Jeff Steele will return for his sixth consecutive year during their 2010 campaign. The announcement comes after a successful 2009 season during which Steele led the Tobs to the post season yet again, winning the Coastal Plain League South Division during the second half, and having the best overall record in the South Division. It was the Tobs’ third division title under Steele, having done so during the ’05 and ‘08 seasons as well.

“It’s just always an exciting feeling when I arrive in Wilson prior to the start of every season,” Steele said. “I look forward to heading back there for another year. Wilson is a first-class organization and a first-class community to play baseball for.”

Wilson has reached the Petitt Cup Tournament in each of Steele’s five seasons holding the managerial reins. Steele is the head pitching coach at Lubbock Christian University. Prior to his time there, Steele spent one year as an assistant coach at Chattanooga State Community College where he worked primarily with the pitchers.

As a player, Steele was an All-Conference and All-Region pitcher at Collin County (TX) Community College. Transferring to Oklahoma Baptist University for his junior and senior seasons, Steele was an All-American in 2004 posting a 10-1 record with a 3.14 ERA in 97 innings. The Tobs’ front office is pleased to have the team’s all-time winningest coach back in the dugout.

“Obviously, we are very pleased to have Jeff Steele back here in Wilson for a sixth season,” Tobs’ GM Benjamin Jones said. “The fact that we have been able to reach the post-season each year under Jeff says a lot about what he can do. He really represents the community well out there on the field each night.”

The Wilson Tobs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its twelfth season, the Coastal Plain League features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
