Wilson, NC — The Wilson Tobs capped off an incredible 2009 season with their biggest win of the season Tuesday night in front of 2,280 fans at Fleming Stadium to beat the Fayetteville SwampDogs by a score of 16-0.
The win gives the Tobs a season-ending record of 35-21, the best record of any Tobs team in their 13 seasons in the Coastal Plain League. The Tobs also won their second straight southern division second half championship, a feat they also accomplished under head coach Jeff Steele in 2008. It was the Tobs' biggest win of the season, trumping the 10-0 shutout victory the Tobs recorded at home against Columbia back on July 23.
It was the highest offensive output by the Tobs since June 20, 2007, when the Tobs scored 16 runs against the Petersburg Generals in a 16-2 win.
The Tobs got four runs in the first inning, thanks in large part to a three-run home run by Matt Johns, his fourth of the season and second in as many days to give the Tobs a 4-0 lead.
The Tobs would add five more in the third, and five more in the fourth inning as Wilson batted around twice in consecutive innings. A Dale Cornstubble home-run in the fourth would highlight the scoring, giving the Tobs a 14-0 lead.
Every player in the Tobs starting lineup scored at least one run in the ballgame. Bryant Lopez and Jake Astor each led the way for the Tobs with three hits.
Taylor Miller (2-4) pitched six strong innings and picked up the win for the Tobs, his second of the season. Brian Willis (0-2) of Fayetteville picked up the loss after giving up nine runs in three innings, his second of the season. Andrew Webb came on in the seventh to pick up his 1st save of the season after pitching three innings in relief.
Before the game, Steele was recognized as the winningest coach in Wilson Tobs history with an on-field ceremony. Tobs centerfielder Bobby Leeper was awarded the Tobs offensive Player of the Year award, and closer Jason Sullivan brought home Pitcher of the Year honors.
The Tobs now begin their quest for the Petitt Cup in the CPL Playoffs as the Tobs, the third seed in the playoffs, will travel to Fayetteville to take on the SwampDogs in a winner-take-all one-game playoff matchup. LHP Trent Howard is scheduled to pitch for the Tobs, while RHP Matt McGovern will pitch for the SwampDogs.
