Florence, SC — The Wilson Tobs turned in a dramatic 4-3 victory Monday night in front of 1,853 fans to beat the Florence RedWolves at American Legion Field by a score of 4-3.
The win marks the second straight division second half championship for the Tobs, a feat they also accomplished under head coach Jeff Steele in 2008.
The Tobs got single runs in the first and second innings, when Bobby Leeper stole home and Aaron Watkins lined an RBI-single to right-field to give the Tobs a 2-0 lead.
With the game tied 2-2 in the seventh, Dale Cornstubble reached on a bunt-single and a double-error by the RedWolves to advance him over to third base. Matt Johns followed with a long home run to left field, near the top of the left-field light tower, a two-run shot, and Johns' third of the season to give the Tobs a 4-2 lead.
In the ninth, the RedWolves loaded the bases with one out against Tobs closer Jason Sullivan. But the Tobs got Florence left-fielder Taylor Lewis to bounce into a 5-2-3 double play to end the ballgame, and make the Tobs 2nd half champions in the Southern division.
Brennan Dobbins (5-1) capped his strong season in picking up the win in relief for the Tobs, working three innings in relief of starter Brent Haynes, each of which allowed a run in their three innings with Dobbins getting the victory, his fifth of the season. Kyle Schapel (0-1) of Florence picked up the loss, his first of the season. Sullivan came on in the eighth to pick up his 15th save of the season.
The Tobs return home for their final regularly scheduled home contest of 2009 as they take on the Fayetteville SwampDogs in a possible first round playoff preview.
