Tobs lose heartbreaker in nightcap to split

August 3, 2009

Wilmington, NC — The Wilson Tobs split a doubleheader with the Wilmington Sharks as the Tobs beat Wilmington in front of a handful fans Sunday night who opted to wait out a near three-hour rain delay at Buck Hardee Field in game one by a score of 3-1 and then falling 3-2 in the nightcap.

The second game did not end until nearly 11:30 PM, and only ended when the Tobs tried to steal home to tie the second game, but Drake Austin was thrown out at the plate during a Nick Obey rundown between first and second to end the contest.

Tobs relievers Trent Howard (6-1) picked up the win in game one after throwing two scoreless innings. Jerris Springfield (2-2) had the best game of any Tobs pitchers over the weekend, but picked up a tough-luck loss after pitching a season high 3.2 innings allowing a single unearned run that scored on a Jason Trivett wild pitch, his second of the season.

Justin Vasquez chipped in with two doubles and Dale Cornstubble tied game two with a two-run single in the fifth to lead the Tobs offensively on the night.

The Tobs travel to Florence to face the RedWolves for their final road contest of the regular season on Monday, August 3 beginning at 7:30pm. The Tobs then return home for their final regularly scheduled home contest of 2009 as they take on the Fayetteville SwampDogs in a possible first round playoff preview. Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.

The Wilson Tobs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
