Wilson, NC — The Wilson Tobs came back from two runs down in a three-run seventh inning at Fleming Stadium Wednesday night in front of 1,035 fans to beat the Fayetteville SwampDogs by a score of 5-4.
Bobby Leeper launched his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot in the second inning to give the Tobs a 2-0 lead.
Then trailing 4-2 in the seventh, Matt Zeblo hit a towering home run down the left-field line to leadoff the inning. The solo shot, Zeblo's first in a Tobs uniform cut the Tobs' deficit in half at 4-3. Then an RBI-single from Matt Johns on an 0-2 pitch tied the contest, Dale Cornstubble lined a two-out RBI-double into the left field corner to give the Tobs a 5-4 lead, a lead they would never relinquish.
Frank Newcomb picked up the victory in relief for the Tobs, working two innings in relief of starter Brennan Dobbins, who pitched five innings to pick up the win in his first game as a Wilson Tob to improve to 1-0. Greg Robinson of Fayetteville allowed base hits to all four batters he faced in the seventh to pick up the loss, his third of the season. Jason Sullivan came on in the ninth to pick up his 13th save, the most ever by a Wilson Tob since their inception into the Coastal Plain League.
The win is the 31st victory for the Tobs in 2009, tying their 2008 win total with seven games still left to play.
The Tobs travel to Fayetteville to battle SwampDogs on Wednesday, then return home on Friday July 31 to host the Columbia Blowfish beginning at 7:05pm. Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.
