Wilson, NC — The Wilson Tobs got solid pitching as the Tobs split a doubleheader with the Florence RedWolves at Fleming Stadium Tuesday night by scores of a 2-1 loss, and a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, Matt Sparks pitched a complete game to pick up the victory for Florence. The only mistake made by the right-hander from UT Tyler was allowing a solo home run to Jake Astor to give the Tobs their only offense of game one.
Sacrifice flies by Barrett Kleinecht and Steven Neff gave the RedWolves their offense, and the only two runs they needed in game one.
Sparks picked up the game one win, while Jerris Springfield earned the loss in relief to fall to 2-1. Tobs starter Steven Huff was effective in 5 innings on his own "mustache night" at the ballpark, but did not factor in the decision after pitching five innings of one run baseball.
More "small-ball" ensued in game two, as Jesse Hernandez (3-3) pitched 5.1 innings allowing only two runs in his most effective 2009 start to get his third win before handing the game to Jason Sullivan who came on to record the save, his 12th of the season.
The win is the 30th victory for the Tobs in 2009, the second straight season the Tobs accomplished the feat.
The Tobs host the Fayetteville SwampDogs on Wednesday, July 29 beginning at 7:05pm. Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.
