Tobs edge Blowfish in 3-2 pitchers duel win

July 27, 2009

Wilson, NC — The Wilson Tobs got solo home runs from Bobby Leeper and Matt Johns and held on as the Tobs beat the Columbia Blowfish in front of 942 fans at Fleming Stadium Sunday night by a score of 3-2.

Leeper led off the ballgame with a high-flying solo home run off the foul pole down the left-field line to quickly give the Tobs a 1-0 lead. It was the first leadoff home run for the Tobs in 2009, and Leepers sixth home run of the season. Leeper's career high last season was three in the Coastal Plain League.

In the second, Matt Johns launched a solo homer leading off the inning, on the first pitch he saw from Blowfish starter Tyler Christman. It was Johns' second home run of the season, and second in as many games against Columbia to make it 2-0.

In the fifth, Leeper added a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 in favor of Wilson. The sacrifice fly gave him 22 RBI on the season, most on the club.

Trent Howard (5-1) got another win after pitching six scoreless innings allowing one run and striking out eight in the contest to record his fifth win in a Tobs uniform, tying him for most on the team. Christmas (1-5) allowed three runs in five innings to take his fifth loss of the season. Jason Sullivan came on in the eighth, and pitched the games' final two innings, recording his 11th save in a Tobs uniform.

The Tobs take a day off before returning to Fleming Stadium for an all-important double-header against the Florence RedWolves scheduled for Tuesday, July 28 beginning at 6:05pm. Each game will consist of seven innings in length. The Tobs will be celebrating Retro Lube Night at the ballpark. Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.

The Wilson Tobs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its thirteenth season, the Coastal Plain League features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
