Sidewinding setback: Sommerville spins gem in Tobs loss

July 23, 2009

Columbia, SC — Erik Sommerville brought a no-hitter into the sixth inning, retired 16 straight batters, and pitched seven innings of dominant baseball in front of 841 fans Capital City Stadium on Tuesday night as the Columbia Blowfish beat the Wilson Tobs by a score of 6-1.

Columbia picked up three runs in the opening inning, primarily on three Tobs fielding errors, then added single runs in the second, third and seventh innings.

With two outs in the sixth, Sommerville had retired 16 straight batters and was an out away from getting through the sixth inning, but Tobs All-Star Bobby Leeper was at the plate. Leeper blooped a 3-2 pitch into fair territory down the right-field line for a two-out single to break up the potential no-hitter.

The Tobs avoided a shutout with two outs in the ninth thanks to a two-out RBI-single by Matt Zeblo to make it 6-1, ending the scoring.

Sommerville picked up the well-deserved victory on the mound, improving to 2-2 on the year. Tobs starter Jesse Hernandez got the loss to fall to 2-3. Each of the three losses Hernandez has this season have come in the three games the right-hander has started.

The Tobs finish a home-and-home series with the Columbia Blowfish on Thursday, July 23 beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating Farm Bureau Insurance Tobs Hat Night at the ballpark for the first 500 fans. Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.
