Four homers, three ejections, and triple play mark Tobs 12-4 win

July 18, 2009

Edenton, NC — The Wilson Tobs hit a season-high four home runs, and turned their first triple play under current Head Coach Jeff Steele to help the Tobs beat the Edenton Steamers in front of 824 fans at Hicks Field Saturday night by a score of 12-4.

The Tobs took a 9-0 lead in the games' first four innings and never looked back, as the Tobs hit four home runs, two of which were the first of a Tobs' respective season. All-Star center-fielder Bobby Leeper launched his third home run of the season, tying his season total from 2008 with over two weeks to play. Justin Vasquez hit an opposite-field two-run homer for his team-high fifth home run of the season. All-Star first-baseman Jake Astor also drilled a solo home run, his first in a Tobs uniform. The same went for Dale Cornstubble as well, whose two-run shot in the sixth was his first in 2009 as well.

In the eighth inning, a fielding error and single put runners on first and second with noone out against Tobs ace and All-Star Trent Howard, who came on in relief for the first time in 2009. With Dan Williams at the plate, the Steamers third baseman hit a routine double-play ball to Tobs second baseman Matt Johns, who flipped to second for the first out, then Drake Austin's relay to first was in time to get Williams for the double-play.

The play was far from over, however. After the second out was recorded, Astor realized that the runner originally on second base, Bill Swanson, was under the impression that the inning had ended with the double play, and began to jog lazily off the bag at third and towards home plate. Astor quickly fired the ball home and Cornstubble quickly chased a surprised Swanson back to the bag at third, throwing to Aaron Watkins to make the tag, to complete the first Tobs triple play in the five-year tenure of Tobs Head Coach Jeff Steele.

Howard (4-1) got the win after pitching 4.1 innings while allowing only a single run and striking out five in the contest to record his fourth win of the season. Scott Burris (2-2) allowed five runs in 1.2 innings to take his second loss of the season. Burris walked the last five batters he faced in the game, two of which came into score.

Every Tobs player in the order from spots 1-7 had at least one RBI, save for Nic Obey who impressed in his Tobs debut, going two-for-two with a season-best four-walks in the contest.

The Tobs will get three days off to honor the CPL All-Star break, then begin a home-and-home series with the Columbia Blowfish, with the home contest on Thursday, July 23 beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating Farm Bureau Insurance Tobs Hat Night at the ballpark for the first 500 fans.
