Wilson, NC — At one point, Tim Adleman struck out seven consecutive batters, only to watch shaky defense and timely hitting see the Thomasville HiToms beat the Wilson Tobs in front of 1,298 fans Wednesday night at Fleming Stadium by a score of 5-4.
Adleman, the right-hander from Georgetown, retired the first eight men he had faced, the last seven of which were on strikeouts, a new Tobs season record for consecutive strikeouts. It was only when Murray White’s ground ball to first base would be misplayed by Jake Astor to break the string and allow the HiToms to score first on a two-run bloop single that fell in thanks to a miscommunication between the Tobs middle infield to give the HiToms a 2-0 lead.
After tying things up at two with a pair of runs of their own, the Tobs took the lead in the fourth inning on an Aaron Watkins RBI-single to make it a 3-2 Wilson edge.
The HiToms and Tobs would battle back-and-forth through the games’ following innings, seeing the HiToms take the lead in the seventh inning against Adleman and reliever Jordan Cudney. Adleman’s last batter of the night came to lead off the frame, and a Chris Epps leadoff triple down the left field would end up coming into score on a Grant Richards RBI-single against Cudney through a drawn in infield to give Thomasville the 5-4 lead.
Adleman (4-3) pitched six innings for the Tobs while striking out 10, but picked up his third loss of the season. Taylor Lasko (2-2) picked up the win for the HiToms, his second of 2009. J.J. Jankowski picked up the save with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief, his first of the season.
The Tobs travel to Wilmington for the first half of a home and home, then return home to battle the Sharks on Friday, July 17 beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating Jack McKeon Bobblehead Night at the ballpark, with a special appearance from former World Series Champion and former Tobs skipper Jack McKeon. Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.
