Tobs find a way in 5-4, 12-inning win

July 12, 2009

Wilmington, NC — The Wilson Tobs lost two leads and nearly a third, but were able to hang on late, thanks in large part to Rob Folsom's two-run double to help the Tobs beat the Wilmington Sharks in front of 2,158 fans at Buck Hardee Field Saturday night by a score of 5-4 in 12 innings.

The Tobs held a 2-0 lead, and a 3-2 lead late in the game, but watched the Sharks come back to tie in the seventh and eighth innings. In what became a frustrating night for Wilmington, the Sharks had put at least two runners on, including the bases loaded in extra frames, but could not capitalize thanks to an amazing night by Tobs reliever Jordan Cudney.

It was Folsom, who came off the bench as a pinch hitter in the seventh, who would deliver the key blow in inning number twelve. After striking out on three pitches in his first at-bat, then popping out to the pitcher on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, Folsom lifted a ball over the head of left-fielder Alex Hill to score Dale Cornstubble, who led off the inning with an infield hit, and Bobby Leeper, who was intentionally walked.

The Sharks got a run in the bottom of the inning, but could do no more as Tobs reliever Jesse Hernandez, in the closers role by default, finished the job to help get the Tobs the win. The Sharks left 16 runners on base during the evening.

Cudney (1-0) got the win after pitching 3.2 scoreless innings while walking five (four intentional) and striking out five in the contest to record his first win in a Tobs uniform. Tyler Andersen (0-2) allowed two in the top of the 12th to take his second loss of the season. Hernandez gave up an unearned run in the ninth but recorded his first save in a Tobs uniform.

The Tobs return home to battle the Catawba Valley Stars for the one and only time in 2009 on Monday, July 13 beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating their third and final edition of the Legends of the Tobs Series at the ballpark, with the first 200 fans recieving a limited edition Brandon Hall Commemorative Baseball. Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.
