Wilson, NC — The Wilson Tobs will face the Peninsula Pilots only once this season.
Good thing.
The Tobs couldn't handle the offensive attack of 11 runs on 17 hits as the Pilots beat the Tobs in front of 2,357 fans at Fleming Stadium Friday night by a score of 11-4.
This is the third time the Tobs have given up more than 10 runs in a ballgame, all of which have come in the last 10 games.
The Tobs took a 1-0 lead thanks to a Matt Faiman RBI-double in the third inning, but watched their lead fade quickly. The Pilots scored two runs in the fourth inning to take the lead right back, then add on six in the fifth against Tobs starter Taylor Miller and reliever Jerris Springfield to make it 8-1. A Chaz Crane two-run double and a three-run homer from Jake Davies would highlight the offense in the frame.
The Tobs would answer with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on bases loaded walks to Jake Astor and Drake Austin and a sacrifice fly by Dale Cornstubble to make it 8-4, but the team would come no closer in the contest.
Billy Barber and Davies each finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle in the ballgame to navigate the way for the Pilots, who improve to a league-best 7-1 in the second half this season. The Tobs fall out of a first-place tie with the Florence RedWolves with the loss, dropping them to 6-3.
Miller (1-4) started and went 4.2 innings for the Tobs, allowing six runs in picking up his fourth loss for the Tobs. Josh Eidt pitched five scoreless innings of relief for the Pilots to get the win to improve his record to 1-0.
The Tobs travel to take on the Wilmington Sharks this Saturday night, then return home to battle the Catawba Valley Stars beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating the third and final edition of the Legends of the Tobs Series, honoring former Tobs manager Brandon Hall with a special commemorative baseball available to the first 200 fans into Fleming Stadium. Don’t forget, if you can't make it out to the park, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.
