Columbia, SC — The Wilson Tobs got offense from the most unlikely of sources as pitcher Andrew Webb, forced into action at second base, helped the Tobs beat the Columbia Blowfish in front of 673 fans Thursday night at Capital City Stadium by a score of 7-3.
Webb, who has been used as an infielder at NC-Wesleyan during his college season, had been for the most part, used only as a pitcher in 2009 by the Tobs. On Thursday, Tobs second baseman Matt Johns was ejected in the second inning by home plate umpire Rob Porter after arguing a called third strike. With a thin bench due to a few briefly departed players, it was Webb who was called on to fill in at second base. Four ground balls, two of which that tested the range of the 5’7” Webb were played flawlessly.
Even with all the defensive success, the biggest surprises came at the plate from Webb. After nearly grounding into an inning-ending double play in the fourth, Webb was hit by an 0-2 pitch from Blowfish Brandon Miller and ended up scoring on Drake Austin’s go-ahead RBI-single. Webb would later make it 5-2 when he beat out a infield single to drive in a run and notch his first hit as a Wilson Tobs in four at bats.
To cap off the night, Webb’s final at bat was the icing on the cake as Webb laced a 2-1 pitch down the right field line for a two-out double, and came around to score on the second of two Jake Astor RBI-singles to make it 7-3 in the ninth and complete the scoring.
Tim Adleman (4-2) pitched six innings as the starter for the Tobs to pick up his fourth win of the season. Miller (0-2) picked up the loss for the Blowfish, his second of 2009. Steven Huff picked up the save with three scoreless innings of relief, his first of the season. Huff also struck out five of the ten batters he faced, in his most impressive appearance in 2009.
The Tobs return home to battle the Peninsula Pilots for the one and only time in 2009 on Friday, July 10 beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating Greenlight night at the ballpark.
