Wilson, NC — The Wilson Tobs got all of their runs in one big fourth inning, then hung on as the Tobs edged the Wilmington Sharks in front of 1,279 fans at Fleming Stadium Wednesday night by a score of 5-4.
The win improves the Tobs season record against Wilmington to 7-1, their best record against any team in 2009.
The Tobs scored five runs to erase a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks in large part to center fielder Bobby Leeper. The product out of UNC-Wilmington and former Wilmington Shark laced a three-run double to help build a lead the Tobs would never relinquish.
Three Tobs relievers combined to work five innings in relief of Tobs starter Jeff Brown to help the team pick up the victory.
Jerris Springfield (2-0) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for the Tobs in picking up his second win. Jordan Cudney came on to pitch a scoreless 1.2 innings with normal Tobs closer Jason Sullivan briefly away from the club to pick up his second save of the season. Max Friedman (1-3) allowed five runs (three earned) in five innings and picked up the loss, his third of the season.
The Tobs travel to Columbia for a Thursday night game against the Blowfish, then return home to battle the Peninsula Pilots for the one and only time in 2009 on Friday, July 10 beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating Greenlight Night at the ballpark. Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.
