Wilson, NC — The Wilson Tobs have had success against the Florence RedWolves all season. On Monday night, the RedWolves turned the tables on the Tobs in front of 948 fans at Fleming Stadium by a score of 6-2.
The Tobs, won had won five of six from the division-leading RedWolves, fall to 3-2, and a game and a half out of the CPL 2nd Half South Division Race.
The Tobs fell behind quickly as Florence scored single runs in the second and fourth, one of which came on a two-out solo home run from the designated hitter and starting pitcher Barrett Kleinecht to left field, high off the top of the Fleming Stadium Scoreboard to make it 2-0. The Tobs would tie things up with single runs of their own, this time in the fourth and fifth, thanks in part to an Aaron Watkins RBI-groundout to knot things up 2-2.
In the sixth, against Tobs starter Jesse Hernandez, the RedWolves were finally able to break through offensively. A fielding error by Tobs shortstop Matt Johns, a sacrifice fly by Herman Petzold, and an RBI-double by Preston Shuey made it 5-2 in favor of Florence, who would add on an insurance run in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Kleinecht (2-0) pitched six innings as the starter for Florence to pick up his second win of the season. Hernandez (2-2) picked up the loss for the Tobs, his second of 2009. Both of Hernandez’ losses this season have come in his two starts for Wilson. Right-handed sidewinder John Taylor picked up the save with three scoreless innings of relief, his second of the season.
The Tobs hit the road to battle the Fayetteville SwampDogs on Tuesday night, then come home to take on the Wilmington Sharks this Wednesday night beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating their mascot, Slugger’s Birthday presented by Denny’s Restaurant, with all of his mascot friends!
