Fayetteville pounds out big win over Wilson

July 4, 2009

Fayetteville, NC — The Wilson Tobs pitching staff has been rock solid all season, but in the past week, it’s been hit hard, evidenced again by another big loss, this time to the Fayetteville SwampDogs in front of a record-crowd of 5,381 fans at JP Riddle Stadium by a score of 12-5.

The Tobs, who had sported a league best ERA near 2.30 for the first few months, now have an ERA of 6.25 during the past four games.

Fayetteville got solo home runs from Jared Humphreys and Matt Skirving Skirving had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one of which was a steal of home in the fifth inning.

The Tobs got their first run on a solo home run from Justin Vasquez in the fifth, his third home run of the season for the lone run off of starter Ben Graham to make it 5-1 SwampDogs. Graham was outstanding once again, giving up just one earned run, two hits, one walk while striking out six four innings. Wes Dutton (3-0) came in for Graham during the 5th inning to pitch two innings and get his third victory of the season.

The Tobs brought the score as close as 6-3, and nearly took the lead on a long fly ball to left-center field from Matt Johns with the bases loaded in the sixth, which would have been the go-ahead grand-slam, but would be caught on the warning track by Nathaniel Lami.

The game was put out of reach in the 8th inning when the SwampDogs put five runs on the board off Andrew Webb to put themselves up 12-4 thanks in part to a 2-run double from Eric Grabe, who had three hits on the night.

Tobs starter Taylor Miller (1-3) got the loss, his third of the season.

The Tobs take on the Wilmington Sharks for a 4th of July celebration this Saturday beginning at 7:05pm. After the game, fans are invited to stay for a spectacular 4th of July fireworks show presented by Thomas & Farris. If you cant make it into the ballpark, you can hear a live soundtrack of the Fleming Stadium fireworks show on the WUBN 106.9-FM after the ballgame during the Thomas & Farris Postgame Show. Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.

The Wilson Tobs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
