Tobs get much needed win over SwampDogs

July 3, 2009

Wilson, NC — It may not have been a game with the magnitude of the last time these two teams met for a title, but the Wilson Tobs got themselves a feel-good win over the Fayetteville SwampDogs on Thursday night in front of 2,139 fans at Fleming Stadium by a score of 8-1.

The Tobs have now won their first two games of the second half of the season, and are a season best eight games over .500 at 19-11.

Fayetteville struck first in the 3rd inning when Brendan Rowland drove in Nathaniel Lami from second on an RBI single to center. The Tobs would take a lead in the fourth, all with two outs. SwampDogs starter Matt Kole gave up four singles in a row: including RBI-singles by Rob Folsom, Matt Johns, and Dale Cornstubble to make it 3-1 Wilson.

In the 8th, the Tobs put the ball game away with a four run eighth inning. An inning highlighted by a two-run triple by Bobby Leeper, and an RBI single to Ellis Lowe, who had four hits on the night to tie a Tobs season record, to help increase Wilson’s advantage to 8-1.

Tim Adleman pitched five innings of one run baseball to pick up the win to improve to 3-2 on the season. Kole picked up the loss in his first start of the year for Fayetteville to fall to 0-1.

The Tobs take on the SwampDogs tomorrow in game two of a home and home series, then battle the Florence RedWolves for the first time in the second half on Monday, July 6 beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating Monday, July 6: Legends of the Tobs Series Giveaway at the ballpark, honoring former Tobs head coach and current Barton Bulldogs boss, Todd Wilkinson with a special hand-crafted artist-rendered baseball going to the first 500 fans into Fleming Stadium. Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.
