Folsom helps Tobs open second half with win

July 1, 2009

Thomasville, NC — Rob Folsom lined a two-out, bases-loaded, two-run single in the eighth inning as the Wilson Tobs came back on two separate occasions to beat the Thomasville HiToms in front of 483 fans at Finch Field by a score of 8-6 in the second half CPL opener Tuesday night.

The Tobs scored a pair of runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth innings to account for all their offense. Aaron Watkins lined a two-run single to left field to cut into a 3-0 deficit and make it a 3-2 ballgame.

Wilson scored their next pair of runs in the following inning to take a 4-3 lead on an RBI-single by Zach Johnson and a throwing error by HiToms third baseman David Greene to give the Tobs the lead. In the bottom half of the frame, Thomasville DH Chris Epps sent Wilson starter Steven Huff's final pitch of the ballgame over the wall in right-center field to give the HiToms the lead 6-4.

The Tobs quickly answered in the sixth thanks to another RBI-single by Johnson and a wild pitch to score Justin Vasquez to re-tie the game at six.

Then in the eighth, after Bobby Leeper had led off the inning with a double and unexplainably was caught stealing third base with nobody out, Rob Folsom lined a two-out, bases-loaded, two-run single to score the go-ahead run and give the Tobs an 8-6 lead, a lead they would never relinquish.

Jesse Hernandez (2-1) picked up the win after four scoreless innings of relief while striking out three. Spencer Mathews (3-3) got the loss after pitching two innings and allowing two runs, both of which were inherited by reliever Taylor Lasko and scored when Lasko gave up the eighth-inning single to Folsom. Jason Sullivan came on to pitch the ninth and picked up his seventh save of the season.

The Tobs host the Fayetteville SwampDogs to open the second half of the CPL season Thursday night beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating Fat Tire Night, as well as another installment of the Tobs Thirsty Thursday series at the ballpark. Don't forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.

The Wilson Tobs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its thirteenth season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
