Tobs 'pen suffers in first half finale

SwampDogs take playoff spot with 11-3 win

June 30, 2009

Wilson, NC — For the second time in three games, the Tobs bullpen was unable to hold a lead as the Wilson Tobs watched a 3-1 lead evaporate late and fell 11-3 to the Fayetteville SwampDogs in the winner-take-all contest in front of 922 fans at Fleming Stadium by a score of 11-3 on Monday night.

With a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning, the SwampDogs scored 10 unanswered runs to give the SwampDogs a CPL Southern Division Championship, clinching a playoff spot as well as the chance to host a first-round playoff game.

The Tobs struck first in the opening inning when Zach Johnson hit a routine ground ball to second baseman Jared Humphreys, but Humphreys wild throw to first base allowed Bobby Leeper to score from second to make it a 1-0 Tobs lead.

The SwampDogs tied the game in the following inning when Taylor Norfleet crushed a Jeff Brown fastball deep over the high wall in right field to tie things up at 1-1.

The Tobs would score two more in the third when Justin Vasquez smoked an RBI triple to right-center field that scored Leeper all the way from first base. On the very next pitch, Johnson singled to left to score Vasquez and give the Tobs a 3-1 lead.

The SwampDogs would score in each inning from the fifth to the ninth, with a total of 10 runs in the innings. In the seventh, Norfleet stroked a three-run double to left field, just out of the reach of a diving Justin Vasquez to make it a 6-3 Fayetteville lead.

Matt Skirving put his stamp on the SwampDog victory in the 8th inning with a grand slam home run off Jerris Springfield that gave Fayetteville a 10-3 lead. The homer was Skirving’s third of the season and gave him 13 RBI on the season.

Ben Graham picked up the win after pitching two scoreless innings of relief to improve to 2-0. Brennan Dobbins got the loss after going 1.1 innings allowing five runs to fall to 1-1 on the season.

The Tobs take on the Thomasville HiToms Tuesday night beginning at 7:05pm. Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.
