Tobs win sets up Monday night showdown
June 28, 2009
Wilson, NC — A nine-run fourth inning helped the Wilson Tobs steamroll the Outer Banks Daredevils in a matchup of former CPL North foes as the Tobs improved to 17-10 in front of 1,513 fans at Fleming Stadium by a score of 13-6 on Saturday night.
The nine-run fourth inning featured two-run singles from Bobby Leeper and Jake Astor, as well as a two-run home run by Zach Johnson. The last time the Tobs scored nine runs in a single inning was back on July 16, 2006 when the Tobs struck for as many runs in a 14-1 victory over the Peninsula Pilots.
Jeff Bloomer (1-0) came on in relief of a struggling and frustrated Trent Howard and pitched three innings while striking out three in picking up his first win of the season. Jim Birmingham (0-1) allowed eight unearned runs in getting his first loss of the season.
Leeper, Matt Johns and Ellis Lowe each had two hits for the Tobs in the victory.
The Tobs take on the Fayetteville SwampDogs in a possible winner-take-all for a first place championship in the CPL Southern Division this Monday, June 29 beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating Jana Lake State Farm Night, which will include a Wilson Tobs Team Autographed Baseball Giveaway. Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.
