Columbia, SC — The Wilson Tobs bullpen were unable to hold a lead late as they watched a four-run lead slip away as they fell to the Columbia Blowfish in front of 513 fans at Capital City Stadium in 10 innings by a final score of 6-5 on Friday night.
The Tobs can still clinch the Coastal Plain League’s Southern Division Saturday night with a win over the Outer Banks Daredevils and a Fayetteville SwampDogs loss against Fayetteville. If that scenario does not take place, the first half championship will be decided when the teams play their final game of the first half, ironically enough, against other here at Fleming Stadium Monday night at 7:05pm.
Leading 5-1 in the seventh inning, Tobs starter Taylor Miller exited the ballgame after pitching 6.2 innings and in line for his second win of the season. Jesse Hernandez came on to allow an RBI-single to John Long and a two-run double to Trent Still to make it a 5-4 Tobs lead. Then in the ninth with Tobs star closer Jason Sullivan on the mound, the Blowfish tied things on a two-out RBI-single by Matt Leeds, who had been 0-for-4 in the ballgame to make it 5-5. Then in the tenth, an RBI-single by Matt Williams on a ground ball to second baseman Aaron Watkins that took a wicked hop over his head and into right-center field to give the Blowfish the 6-5 victory.
Drew Mahaffey (1-1) pitched two innings of scoreless baseball to pick up his first win of the season for Columbia. Haynes suffered the loss, dropping his record to 0-3.
The Tobs will host the Outer Banks Daredevils at Fleming Stadium on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 7:05pm. The Tobs will then take a day off before returning home for a Monday night contest against the Fayetteville SwampDogs in a possible winner-take-all for a first place championship in the CPL Southern Division this Monday, June 29 beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating Jana Lake State Farm Night, which will include a Wilson Tobs Team Autographed Baseball Giveaway. Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.
