Three former Tobs win National Championship with LSU Tigers
June 25, 2009
Wilson, NC — The Wilson Tobs congratulate three of its former players as members of Louisiana State University’s Division One National Championship at the College World Series in Omaha, NE. Pitchers Paul Bertuccini, Ryan Byrd, and second baseman Chris McGhee and the rest of the LSU Tigers picked up a 11-4 victory over the University of Texas in a deciding game three of the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium Wednesday night.
LSU, who couldn’t even make its conference tournament two seasons ago, won their sixth national title thanks to the help of the former Tobs.
Bertuccini was a valuable member of the Tigers bullpen, appearing in 28 games this season and going 2-0 with a 2.86 ERA. Byrd went 1-0 with a 5.81 ERA in 13 games. McGhee was a solid role player for the Tigers, hitting .286 in 40 games, including appearing in the ninth inning of the LSU’s title-clinching game.
As Tobs in 2008, Bertuccini went 0-1 with a 2.76 ERA in 12 games, Byrd went 1-3 with a 5.08 ERA, and McGhee hit .232 with eight RBI.
The Wilson Tobs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
