Faiman’s sac-fly wins Tobs 5th straight

Outfielder’s pinch-hit RBI the difference in 2-1 win

June 25, 2009

Wilson, NC — For the second straight home game, the Wilson Tobs walked off with a victory as the Tobs beat the division-leading Fayetteville SwampDogs in front of 1,002 fans at Fleming Stadium Wednesday night by a final score of 2-1 to recapture first place in the CPL Southern Division.

The Tobs have now won a season-high five games in a row, and are now beginning to close in on clinching a playoff spot. The Tobs currently sit with a magic number of two to clinch a spot as, at worst, the Wildcard spot in the CPL. A Wilson win Thursday night over Wilmington combined with a Florence RedWolves loss at Gastonia will guarantee the Tobs nothing worse than a Wildcard birth into the CPL playoffs at season’s end.

The Tobs opened the scoring in the first when Bobby Leeper led off the game for Wilson with a single, then stole second and third base, the latter of which came coupled with a throwing error on SwampDogs catcher Brock Whiteman which allowed Leeper to score and make it 1-0 Tobs.

In the seventh, Jordan Cudney came on in place of the starting pitcher Brennan Dobbins and allowed a game-tying RBI-single to Fayetteville designated hitter Wet Delatte to make it a 1-1 tie.

The score would remain the same until the ninth when Jake Astor led off the inning with a walk. Zach Johnson would reach on an error by SwampDogs reliever Tom Schmidt as he was trying to lay down a bunt, then shortstop Ellis Lowe executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners up to second and third. After a intentional walk to Rob Folsom, Tobs head coach Jeff Steele brought pinch-hitter Matt Faiman to the plate, who delievered a sacrifice fly to left field to score pinch-runner Aaron Watkins to end the ballgame.

Leeper went 2-for-3 for the Tobs with a run scored and three stolen bases to lead the Tobs in the contest.

Brennan Dobbins started and went six innings for the Tobs, allowing one-run before Jordan Cudney came on for part of the seventh and the whole eighth inning and pitched two perfect innings in relief. Jason Sullivan (4-0) pitched a scoreless ninth to notch his fourth win in 2009. Fayetteville starter Ben Graham pitched eight innings for the SwampDogs, and Schmidt (4-1) who picked up his first loss of 2009.

The Tobs take on the Wilmington Sharks for the one and only time in 2009 tomorrow, June 25 beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating Airport Barber Shop - Free Haircut Night at the ballpark. Don’t forget, if you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM beginning Wednesday night with the Thomas & Farris Pregame Show at 6:50PM.

The Wilson Tobs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its thirteenth season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
