Tobs win two straight over Wilmington

June 21, 2009

Wilmington, NC — The Wilson Tobs got strong starting pitching for the second straight night, this time by Trent Howard as they shutout the Wilmington Sharks in front of 1,956 fans at Buck Hardee Field by a final score of 2-0 on Saturday night.

The shutout was the fourth from the Tobs this season. The Tobs, who have been stabilized this season by their starting pitching in 2009, have allowed only two runs in their last 20 innings of play, dating back to the second game of the June 18 doubleheader at Columbia. Furthermore, the Tobs have allowed an earned run in only one of their past five games.

Miller (1-2) was outstanding in spinning seven, two-hit, one-run innings en route to his first win of 2009. Jeff Brown pitched the final two innings in the contest to pick up his first save of the season.

At the plate, designated hitter Jake Astor went 2-for-4 to pace the Tobs in the victory.

The Tobs will then take a day off before returning home for a Monday night contest against the Florence RedWolves beginning at 7:05pm. The Tobs will be celebrating the Thomas & Farris Legends of the Tobs Giveaway Series, this time with a commemorative piece dedicated to Tobs head coach Jeff Steele (First 200 Fans). Don’t forget, you can hear every pitch of the 2009 Tobs season with the Voice of Wilson Tobs Baseball, Dan Hasty, live on WUBN 106.9-FM.

The Wilson Tobs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its thirteenth season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
