Tobs get clutch hits late in 3-1 win

Faiman's big ninth inning the difference in Florence

June 18, 2009

Florence, SC — In a game where leaving runners on base was the theme of the night, Wilson Tobs outfielder Matt Faiman made sure he would not only strand a runner on base in the ninth, but also made sure he wouldn't be stranded as well as some great plays late helped the Tobs beat the Florence RedWolves in front of 1,254 fans at American Legion Field Wednesday night by a final score of 3-1.

The RedWolves struck first when RedWolves third baseman Brad Raj bounced an infield RBI-single to second to make it a 1-0 ballgame. Bobby Leeper would tie the score in the fourth on a double-play ball that scored Matt Johns to tie the game at one.

The score would remain the same until the ninth, when the Tobs were able to get to the Florence bullpen as Leeper got on with a one-out single against RedWolves reliever David Haselden. After stealing second, Faiman would connect on an 0-2, two-out single to left field to score Leeper and give the Tobs the 2-1 lead. One pitch later, Xavier Macklin bounced a high-chopper to Florence second baseman Herman Petzold, whose throw to first was unable to get Macklin. During the play, Faiman, who was running from second base without hesitation, scored with a head first dive into home plate on a heads up play to give the Tobs an insurance run and a 3-1 lead.

In the ninth, Tobs closer Jason Sullivan loaded the bases before striking out Florence catcher David Masters to end the ballgame.

The RedWolves left 15 men on base during the ballgame, including the bases loaded on three seperate occasions.

Sullivan (2-0) came on in the eighth and pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball to pick up his second win of the season. Brennan Dobbins started for the Tobs and went 5.1 innings of one-run baseball and was followed by Jerris Springfield who went two scoreless frames. Haselden (1-1) was the losing pitcher in the ballgame, giving him his first loss of the season.

It's the Tobs first win since June 9 over Florence, ending a four-game losing streak and putting the Tobs in third place heading into their doubleheader in Columbia Thursday night.

The Tobs will take on the Blowfish in a doubleheader at Capital City Stadium Thursday night at beginning with the resumption of Monday's suspended game followed by a seven-inning contest all beginning at 6:05pm.
