Tobs and Mustangs rained out in fourth inningJune 14, 2008 Wilson, NC — The Wilson Tobs and the Martinsville Mustangs' game was rained out after an hour-long rain delay, which took place in the top of the fourth inning. The game was halted as the Tobs held a 3-2 lead over Martinsville with one out in the fourth. Fans in attendance at Fleming Stadium can exchange their tickets for any other upcoming Tobs' home game this season. Wilson plated three runs in the bottom of the third against Martinsville starter Sam Heaps. Nick Hogan led off with a single and stole second, advancing to third on Packy Elkins' base hit. Justin Parks then ripped a ground ball that ricocheted into center field off of short stop J.D. Davidson, scoring Hogan. After Chris Henderson laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, Matt Sanders came through with a two run single, giving the Tobs a 3-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, Martinsville picked up a couple, and might have plated more if not for the weather. With one out, Matt Schneider drew a walk from Wilson starter Zach Woodley. Bucky Smith then hit a high fly ball to right field that caught up in the wind of the upcoming thunderstorm, landing beyond the right field fence for a two run homer. The last batter of the game, Ryan LaPensee then singled and stole second base. Catcher Ross Steedley's throw to second base was wild, allowing LaPensee to scamper to third. The game ended with LaPensee on third and a 3-0 count on the next batter, Chas Byrne. Wilson does not see Martinsville on their schedule again this season. The Tobs will be back in action Sunday in Wilmington, where they take on the Sharks in a doubleheader. Both games will consist of seven innings. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4:05 PM, and radio coverage will begin on WUBN 106.9 FM at 3:45 PM with Eric Kopp. Tim Adleman will start game one for Wilson, and he will be followed by right hander Taylor Miller. The Wilson Tobs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its twelfth season, the Coastal Plain League features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
