Lanigan heads list of 112 Coastal Plain League alumni selected in 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft
June 9, 2008
Raleigh, NC — The Coastal Plain League announced Monday that 112 players, both former and players signed for the 2008 season, were drafted in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. A list that featured 16 players selected in the first 10 rounds was highlighted by Robert Lanigan of Adelphi, who played for the Edenton Steamers in 2007, and went in the third round, 92nd pick overall to the Minnesota Twins.
The 112 players drafted is the most CPL alumni total drafted since the league started back in 1997. In 2007, 85 CPL alums were selected in the draft, while 72 CPL alums were taken in the 2006 draft. All exisiting clubs of the current 15 CPL franchises had at least one alum drafted. The Thomasville HiToms led with 15 players drafted, while the Wilson Tobs had 13 players drafted. The Forest City Owls and Spartanburg Stingers, which relocated to Forest City this year, combined for 12 draftees. The Asheboro Copperheads and Florence RedWolves were next with 11 and 10 respectively, while Edenton, Outer Banks and Wilmington each had nine. Peninsula and Gastonia followed with eight drafted, while Martinsville tallied seven draftees.
