Versatile Jesse Lancaster signs with Tobs

May 6, 2008

Wilson, NC — Jesse Lancaster, a member of the number one NCAA Division II team in the nation, has signed on to play with the Wilson Tobs for the 2008 season. Lancaster, a member of the Mount Olive College Trojans, has spent time on the mound and in the outfield for the Conference Carolina Champions. The native of Goldsboro, NC will not be too far from home this summer.

During his 2006 collegiate debut, Lancaster was selected as the CVAC Baseball Freshman of the Year, playing his first year for Mount Olive head coach and father, Carl Lancaster. Jesse picked up his first career complete game victory in his father's 600th career coaching victory against Erskine College on March 18, 2006.

"I can guarantee you that anyone who coaches Jesse will be pleased with him as a person," Coach Lancaster said. "He's very conscientious, and he just loves the game of baseball. He's always been around me while I've been coaching. Heck, he was on the road with us and in the dugout when he was three years old."

In 2008, as an outfielder for Mount Olive, Lancaster was named an All-Conference player. He posted a .344 batting average, while cracking 7 homers and driving in 41 runners. Lancaster's speed was also a benefit, as he went 22 for 23 in stolen base attempts, and had a .435 on base percentage. On the mound, in just 8 appearances, he sported a 4-1 record and a 4.11 ERA in 35 innings of work.

"He has received accolades as a Freshman of the Year pitcher and a First Team All-Conference outfielder," Carl Lancaster said. "He has good speed, good instincts, and he really made himself into a hitter this year. This is due to the fact that he is a great athlete but more importantly an extreme competitor.

The Tobs' season begins on Wednesday, May 28, when they travel to Wilmington to take on the Sharks at 7:05 PM. Wilson will host its home opener on Friday, May 30 against the Florence RedWolves, with first pitch also scheduled for 7:05 PM.

The Wilson Tobs are a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its twelfth season, the Coastal Plain League features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
